Vegetation in North America Series: Abstract of Biomes Dominated by Tree Species
نویسنده
چکیده
The biome concept is used to classify vegetation into distinct groups. This concept integrates the relationship of plants and animals with their distributions. North America is comprised of 11 biomes (arctic tundra, desert, broad sclerophyll, pinyon-juniper, temperate grasslands, northern coniferous forest, moist temperate coniferous forest, temperate deciduous forest, mountain complex, subtropical, and tropical).

Late-quaternary Vegetation Dynamics in North America: Scaling from Taxa to Biomes
This paper integrates recent efforts to map the distribution of biomes for the late Quaternary with the detailed evidence that plant species have responded individualistically to climate change at millennial timescales. Using a fossil-pollen data set of over 700 sites, we review late-Quaternary vegetation history in northern and eastern North America across levels of ecological organization fro...
متن کاملResponse of vegetation to drought time-scales across global land biomes.
We evaluated the response of the Earth land biomes to drought by correlating a drought index with three global indicators of vegetation activity and growth: vegetation indices from satellite imagery, tree-ring growth series, and Aboveground Net Primary Production (ANPP) records. Arid and humid biomes are both affected by drought, and we suggest that the persistence of the water deficit (i.e., t...
متن کاملWhy Do the Boreal Forest Ecosystems of Northwestern Europe Differ from Those of Western North America?
The boreal forest is one of the largest terrestrial biomes on Earth. Conifers normally dominate the tree layer across the biome, but other aspects of ecosystem structure and dynamics vary geographically. The cause of the conspicuous differences in the understory vegetation and the herbivore-predator cycles between northwestern Europe and western North America presents an enigma. Ericaceous dwar...

The rangelands, as one of the largest dynamic biomes in the world, have very capabilities. Regulation of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere, particularly carbon dioxide as the main greenhouse gases, is one of these cases. The attention to rangeland, as cheep and reachable resources to sequestrate thecarbon dioxide, increases after the Industrial Revolution. Rangelands comprise thelarge par...
متن کاملFire and vegetation change during the Early Pleistocene in southeastern Australia
Early Pleistocene vegetation in upland southeastern Australia included diverse rainforests and sclerophyll forests, which alternated on precessional timescales. The nature and timing of transitions between these biomes, and the role of fire in maintaining or driving transitions between them, are uncertain. Here we present a highresolution pollen record from Stony Creek Basin, a small Early Plei...
